health & safety

Flame Retardant

Due to Health and Safety regulations, specific contracts or customers must get their fabrics and wallpapers made flame retardant. This may be because the contract is for a hotel or restaurant or because we are fitting curtains near a wood burner in a customer’s home.

We have a range of wallpapers that meet the Fire Safety Regulations; however, fabrics for curtains and blinds will be selected from our shop range and then sent away to be coated.

We have a contract with Textiles F.R. Ltd to make any chosen fabric flame retardant before it is then fitted.

The product Decabromodiphenylether (Deca_BDE) is widely used by textile finishers to apply flame retardant coatings on fabrics used for upholstery.

Furniture and Furnishings Regulations

Deca_BDE has been used since introducing the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations in 1988. This Statutory Instrument defines the UK legal requirements regarding fire safety for domestic furnishings. Deca_BDE exhibits properties that enable coated fabrics to meet the requirements of the 1988 Statutory Instrument.

How does it work?

Deca_BDE is a highly stable structure under average temperatures & conditions. Only when it is subjected to high temperatures (such as an ignition source in a fire) does Deca_BDE break down the liberating materials.

ignitability

This then actively and efficiently suppresses the ignitability of the material to which it has been applied. This essentially means instead of fabric burning and spreading when it ignites, it will melt away.
